Glass Exhibition (Üvegkiállítás)

The permanent Glass Exhibition came into being in order to commemorate the history and heritage of glass manufacturing in the Eastern Mecsek region.

At the end of the 18th century there was an inflow of glassmakers, originating from Bohemian-Bavarian woods, who started to settle in the beech woods of Eastern Mecsek, first in Óbánya, then Kisújbánya and later in Pusztabánya. The latter used to be called ‘the Glasshouse of Hosszúhetény’.

The exhibition is divided into two parts. It takes the visitor on a journey throughout the history of glass making in Eastern Mecsek. The second part turns attention on a more contemporary art. It displays beautiful glass art pieces which originate from the Pécs Glass Symposiums from the 80s and 90s, where many world famous artists took part, and much more.

The 100m2 exhibition premises were designed and carried out by glass artists János Jegenyés and Ágnes Kertészfi, an interior architect Béla Novotny, a historian Ádám Lang, a culture specialist János Papp and by numerous volunteers.

After exploring our museum, do not forget to check the second floor of the building, where we keep temporary art exhibitions displaying not only modern glass art but also paintings or sculptures.

If you wish to get some fresh air and discover the places where glassmaking used to bloom, take a walk into the Mecsek hills along the Route of the Glass. (Üvegesek Útja). There are 16 stops with informative boards. Our Glass Museum is the starting point of the route. The whole hike is 23km long. It can be divided into two parts a northern and a southern route.
